Establish communications link with LifeStar dispatch. Provide coordinates and if the landing zone is unimproved provide a contact person and contact radio frequency.
Once a landing zone is chosen, provide information to the communications specialists of any known hazards. hazards are wires, antennas, trees, loose or potentially loose debris (constructions sites, parking lots etc.)
Secure the landing area to prevent unauthorized persons from approaching the helicopter. Mark the four corners of the LZ with secure flares.
Beware of flying dirt, snow, ice or other debris during the landing/departure of the aircraft. Rotowash can create 60mph winds.
Approach and depart the helicopter in the pilots field of vision. DO NOT approach the helicopter without approval from the crew. The crew will accompany you to and from the aircraft. Pay attention to the direction given by the medical crew when working around a "hot" aircraft. The tail rotor will be gaurded by one of the medical crew during hot operations.
Carry equipment horizontally, below waist level (never upright, or above shoulder level). Do not wear ball caps or loose hats when approaching the running aircraft. Helmets should be strapped.
No smoking within 50 feet of the aircraft.
