In 1948 the citizens of Greene Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania formed a community action group to determine what was needed to improve the standard of living in the community. After several months of meetings, the idea of a community hose company was brought before the group with great expectations. The group sent to the state for a charter October 31, 1948. The charter was received June 24, 1949, with the official formation of Kuhl Hose Company. The first fire engine, a Ford 2 ton, two speed chassis, was purchased in 1949. A long way from the first fire engine we now operate within the 38 square mile township, with 2 engine company's designated to operator in rural and urban settings, 2 water tenders, 1 mini pumper, 2 Basic Life Support Ambulances, and a rescue boat. With the communications in 1949 any member would receive a phone call then had to call every other member on the phone or be alerted by the fire whistle in an emergency. Today with 911 and activated pager, there is almost instant access to requests for service. Kuhl Hose is a Participating Department in the State Fire Commissioners Recognition program. To obtain this status you must have a minimum of 10% of your active members certified to a minimum of Firefighter 1 status. Currently we have 55% of our active members Certified at this level. Kuhl Hose is also recognized as a Voluntary Rescue Service. This recognition is through the Department of Health and the Fire Commissioners Office and to obtain the certification you must meet minimum training standards and have a required list of equipment. This certification is similar to an ambulance license, including equipment inspections, report submissions, and continuing education. Kuhl Hose currently has 23 Active Fire/EMS members, 1 Junior Firefighter, 2 Fire Police and 24 support members. We responded to approximately 500 Emergency requests each year both in Greene Township and to mutual aid departments.
